Similar in terms of general function but still very different, spanners and wrenches come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are made for certain tasks. Depending on the job, it is necessary to have the right tool on hand to do it effectively and without causing any damage. You could ruin the flats of the nut, bolt or fastener if you try to use an improperly fitting tool. Spanners may be fixed or adjustable, whereas wrenches can always be adjusted. Fixed spanners are meant to fit nuts and bolt heads of a specific size and shape. Adjustable wrenches and spanners are suitable for use on a range of fastener sizes.

For both types of tools, quality construction is a must. For most fastening applications, chrome vanadium or carbon-forged steel tools provide all the torque you need, so they are the best materials. In terms of spanners, the open-ended type is the most common. It consists of a shaft with a working head on one or both ends. You get two different sizes with a single tool, so double-ended spanners are the best. To let you reach hard-to-reach nuts, the heads are offset at about a 15-degree angle. In cramped spaces, this can be especially useful.

Ring spanners feature enclosed heads with either 6 or 12 interior points. More versatile are 12-point spanners, for they can fasten onto both hexagonal and square bolts or nuts. However, they are more prone to rounding a hex nut, while 6-point spanners are designed to fit hex nuts perfectly. You get more leverage with 6-point tools, but the size of the spanner and the size of nut must match. Stronger than the open-ended type, ring spanners can be harder to fit around a fastener. Other types include offset-ring, split-ring, bulldog, box, tap and adjustable spanners.

Wrenches are similar to spanners, but they are the tools of choice when turning, tightening or loosening pipe. Pipe wrenches look like adjustable spanners, but they have serrated jaws to get a better grip. Some of the other types of pipe-turning tools are mole, strap, footprint and Stilson wrenches. Depending on the diameter of the pipe or the pressure you need to exert, one type of pipe wrench will be best suited. Another type of wrench is called a torque wrench, and its purpose is to tighten fasteners to very precise specs. They are commonly used by auto mechanics. Spanners and wrenches are each suited to a particular task according to their size, shape and how much precision tightening is necessary.
