Whether flattening, reducing the thickness or smoothing out a wood surface, a plane is the tool you need. Planes are very simple woodworking tools, but among the most useful. Consistency over the entire wooden surface must be achieved in order to create square, true wooden creations. There are many types of planes, and not all are used for flat surfaces. Some are used to make curves or plow into wood. Woodworkers who like to do things by hand are well advised to keep a large selection of planes in their shop.

A plane consists of a base, handle and cutter. On the bottom of the base or sole of the plane is a slot. How much the blade extends out the slot governs the amount of wood shavings removed. Wood shavings should be removed uniformly when passing the plane over a board or other piece of stock. In this way, high spots on the wood are reduced and leveled, leading to a smoother working surface suitable for building. A pushing motion is the way to use the majority of planes. Some planes like Japanese smoothing and polishing planes are brought towards you. Planes with a helper handle require two hands, but many smaller planes need just one.

Scrub planes remove the most wood in a relatively short amount of time. More accurate than the scrub, a jack plane is the next tool to use when roughing out stock. To achieve the right flatness on wood, use a jointing plane. To prepare a board to be finished you use a smoothing plane, followed by a polishing plane if you need to create very smooth surfaces. Spokeshaves, shoulder planes and moulding planes are three specialty types. Use a finger plane for smoothing out small pieces of stock, a plow plane to make grooves or a bullnose plane when working in very tight spaces. A circular or compass plane is a handy tool for making uniform curves in wood.

Except for the cutter, wooden planes are all wood, whereas transitional planes have a wood body together with a metal blade and casting set. All-metal planes have no wood parts save for perhaps a handle, and infill planes have a metal body filled in with dense wood to add weight.
