The Beginning of Lionel Trains
Born to a Jewish immigrant family in 1877, Joshua Lionel Cowen would go on become the founder of Lionel Trains. It was just after the Civil War that Lionel Cowen immigrated with his family, settling in New York. It was in the midst of major changes in the world, namely the industrial revolution that Lionel Cowen began his life in America. The electric light had just been created by Thomas Edison and railroads and trains became perfect symbols of this new industrial and mechanical age. The west and east were finally connected in America via the Central and Union Pacific railroads, this led to a sense of expansion, optimism and exciting possibilities for some. It made sense that Cowen would become an inventor after growing up in the time of such industrial changes and transitions. As a college drop out, he had been quite productive, being credited around the turn of the century with some notable inventions, including the flashlight, and a patent for a device used to ignite the photographic flash of a camera.
It’s rumored that Lionel Cowen made his first toy train before the age of ten. He made a small locomotive by carving a train out of wood and attaching a working miniature steam engine to it. This early steam locomotive experiment unfortunately exploded, damaging his parents kitchen Even with this early set-back, his creativity was not quenched and went on to found the Lionel Corporation in 1900. By this time, passenger travel was at a height and many saw it as classy and sophisticated. People of all ages were fascinated by this new technology.
It’s sort of ironic that the first working toy train by what would soon become Lionel Trains was not a toy at all, it was a specialty store window display prop, designed to showcase featured merchandise. The success of this gondola train displaying items as it went around a circular track in the store window took an unexpected direction. It failed to highlight featured items in the gondola, this was because it succeeded in creating so much interest that customers would want to buy the fascinating new electric train. Lionel Cowen made a smart decision after seeing this and brought Lionel Corporation around to focus on model trains that remain popular to this day.
