What is tile grout?

Tile grout is a specially formulated form of cement for filling in the spaces between tiles, whether on the wall or the floor. This grout helps to hold the tile together and in place, and also help to maintain a buffer between the tiles themselves. Tile grout is not permanent, and although it should be maintained, it can also be replaced in specific places, or on across a whole area.

Now sold in many different forms, tile grout is available for specific scenarios and applications, and choosing the correct product can appear a daunting task for someone who is not experienced; but whatever your query, do not hesitate to ask for advice from a tile specialist who will be more than happy to help you. The main varieties of tile grout available nowadays vary predominantly in terms of the joint size which they’re appropriate for, in colour (which is obviously important when ensuring they complement your choice of tile), and also in terms of the area they are appropriate for use in, i.e. a general purpose area, or a kitchen, bathroom etc.

The wide joint range of tile grout is especially designed for filling larger joints between tiles ranging from 3mm – 20mm. This range, produced by BAL, is also available with added Microban technology which formulated with built-in antibacterial protection. This makes it an ideal tile grout for application in bathrooms and kitchens where significant levels of moisture are likely to be commonplace, and where it’s especially important to control for harmful bacteria where food may be consumed. The Microban technology works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria such as Listeria, Salmonella, E-coli, and black mould, which could lead to damage to the grout and to an increase in the risk of infection.

Tile grout is also available in Mircoflex and Superflex varieties for application where increased flexibility and enhanced durability are required. Both feature a strong resistance to water and frost, and are ideal for use in power showers and swimming pools. They also feature a built-in admixture which provides a high level of bond and added strength to the grout. If however, you need a tile grout for heavy commercial or industrial use, you would be better suited to opt for an Epoxy grout, such as they ‘EasyPoxy’ range. This range includes grouts appropriate for use in environments where the utmost cleanliness and resistance to other materials is required, such as in hospitals, and industrial and chemical environments. The EasyPoxy range is also appropriate for use in kitchens and bathrooms, and when tiling onto metallic surfaces (with the exception of metal décor/lustre).

The majority of tile grouts set within just 24 hours, with finishing touches ready to apply within just 30 mins of application. Finishing touches can be applied with grouting tools such as a Grout Finisher, which is a profiler tool used to remove excess grout from between tiles, and also to create a clean, even finish.

Of course, don’t forget to factor in colour when choosing your tile grout. There is a huge range of colours available to choose from to help you get the right finish for your project, and to ensure that there are no colour clashes between your tiles and your tile grout.
