Why Are Plastic Stabilizers Used?

Plastic stabilizers are used in almost every major manufacturing process that includes some form of plastic.  Fundamentally, a plastic stabilizer is used solely to help keep the plastic from breaking down when it is exposed to an unfriendly environment.  In many cases, this would be intense heat or friction.  There are a growing number of plastic stabilizers on the market, both organic and inorganic.  When choosing the right stabilizer for the job, there are a variety of different characteristics to consider.

A common consideration for plastic stabilizers is what form they are provided in.  The most common forms include liquid, beads, powders, and fine powders.  Regardless of the form, the stabilizer will do the same thing.  At the same time, in many cases a certain form will prove to be the most efficient depending on when and how it is added.  The grade plays an important role as well.  There are many instances where the same stabilizer will be used for entirely different purposes depending on its grade.  One grade may be used for stabilizing PVC and repelling water, whereas a different grade could be used to improve the grindability of wood paint.

Plastic stabilizers can provide a benefit to the plastic in a variety of different ways.  Some of the most common uses of stabilizers include lubrication, pigment dispersion, anti-tack properties, heat retention, improving water resistance, and adding resistance to certain chemicals such as chlorine.  Toxicity can be another concern with plastic stabilizers because it will determine the capacity in which they can be used.  For example, a non-toxic stabilizer would be necessary to create packaging material for food.

Along with aiding in the creation process of plastics, plastic stabilizers can also be added to improve the durability of the plastic during later manufacturing or machining.  For the most part, plastics can be machined with the same tools that are used on metal, however they can react much differently.  At the same time, certain plastic stabilizers need to be added in order to make this as easy as possible.  Plastics are softer and maintain heat easier than most metals which is why stabilizers will often be used to improve the plastics tolerance to the process as well as to help it release heat faster.

The uses of plastic would not be nearly diverse without the use of plastic stabilizers.  Depending on the stabilizer that is used, the end characteristics can be altered dramatically.  There are not only different stabilizers to choose from, but also different forms and different grades as well.
