Solid Brass Mail Slots – For Residential and Commercial Properties

Mail slots in the United States are a popular choice for residents and businesses that receive mail directly at the door. When door to door mail service became the prevailing method in the United States during the 19th and early part of the 20th century, the post office needed a more efficient means of delivering letters when residents were not home. Before the creation of mail slots and letter boxes a postman would wait at the door until someone was able to take the letters personally – this wasted as much as an hour and a half each day. Mail receptacles (in many different forms) were the solution to this problem – letters could be safely delivered at any time of the day.

A mail slot is considered (by some) to be the safest way to ensure mail is received. A slot is installed in the door (traditionally covered by a flap to protect the interior from weather damage) for letters and catalogs to be pushed through to the inside. Depending on the interior construction the letters may fall directly to the floor or another option is installing a small basket for letters to drop in to. An interior flap can be installed as well for privacy and extra protection. The “flaps” of a mail slot can be either spring loaded or simply use gravity to stay closed.

Mails slots are available in a wide selection of finishes ranging from a Polished Brass to Oil Rubbed Bronze. Traditionally a mail slot is matched with other door hardware (such as the door knob or doorbell). Not all mail slots are the same size and not all can accommodate larger envelopes or magazines so pay attention to size when selecting a new style for your home or business.
