Making a Large Wooden Jewelry Box: Spotlight on Cocobolo

You can make a beautiful large wooden jewelry box with a single wood or combine it with other types of wood. You can get your jewelry box made with an exotic and rare wood like for instance the Cocobolo or use a locally available wood if price is an issue. As the cocobolo has been completely exploited, it is an extremely rare wood.

It is a tropical hardwood, actually a dense rosewood, that grows predominantly in Central America. It belongs to the Dalbergia species and ‘Cocobolo Rosewood’, ‘Granadillo’, and ‘Mexican Rosewood’ are its other names . It reveals many different patterns when it is cut. Even a single board could reveal two different patterns on either side of the board. This makes the wood very attractive for making jewelry boxes.

Ranging from orange to a very deep purple with dark black lines, the colors of the Cocobolo are very vibrant. The color of the wood tends to darken with age and turns into a rich reddish brown or an extremely dark purple. The patterns could be full curls, or eye-like, or just parallel lines.

It has a very strong odor and feels oily to the touch. It can be easily machined although it is a very hard, solid, and dense wood. When you strike a log of Cocobolo, you can hear a very clear musical tone!

Usually only the hardwood is used but sometimes you could create a completely novel pattern by blending the sapwood, which is very light almost white in color, with the dark hardwood.

It is a very sturdy wood, water resistant, and resistant to decay, insects, and diseases.

Finding Cocobolo veneers is not easy as there is not much of this wood left that is commercially available to produce veneers. It is easier to get 8/4 Cocobolo turning squares.

Being a beautiful wood does not necessarily mean the Cocobolo is a safe wood to work with. With prolonged use, it could easily stain your hands and sometimes cause severe allergic reactions when inhaled or when eyes or skin come in contact with the wood.
