Scale Lathe

Some Simple But Beautiful Woodworking Projects
A lathe is a great piece of machinery for the woodworker who wants beautiful results but has limited space to work in. With a little practice, you can make showpiece furniture with your lathe.
Wood bar stools are a perfect starter project. You can start by turning simple tapered legs and stretchers and gradually work your way up to more complicated turnings. You can even turn the bar stool seat on your lathe.
Start with a simple tapered leg. You can easily make tapered legs from square timber simply by putting placing one end of the leg off center in the lathe. It will wobble at first, so you have to be very careful about two things. First, set your chisel rest far enough away from the wood that it doesn’t hit it as it spins. Secondly, start by taking small bites out of the wood rather than trying to hurry the process along.
By the time you have completed four sets of legs for your wooden bar stools, you will be a virtual expert at turning tapered legs. If you like, you can put the legs back on the lathe and add some decorative detailing. Instead of making a dead straight taper, try adding a gentle bulge to give it a less rigid look.
Don’t forget that your legs are going to be inserted into dowl holes on the bottom of your seat. Turn these carefully, stopping to check the diameter with your calipers regularly. Don’t hurry at this. Remember, if they diameter is a little ‘fat, ‘ you can always trim it down, but if it’s too loose, you can’t add timber to it.
Now turn your stretchers. You can make them cylindrical, but they look much nicer if they are tapered at the ends. Put your calipers to good use here and check the diameters of the ends against each other. Then the stretchers will all look uniform.
The hardest part of making these bar stools is putting them together. The legs are not going to be straight, so you will have to drill the holes for the legs and the stretchers at an angle. You can determine the angle best if you make a drawing first. Then, make a jig for your drill press. Make a few practice holes first, so you don’t ruin your stool seats.
Woodworking, like any other craft, is a matter of practice. It’s a good idea to start off with fairly easy projects and work your way up to more complex pieces. You will be surprised how quickly you will improve. Soon you will be making better modern bar stools than you can buy in the store!
