Xerox Phaser 790 – Save Money With This Quality Home Printer

Recently, I was asked to give an opinion on the Phaser 790 printer and Xerox Phaser 790 Printer Cartridge for a friend who was looking for a new printer for her small non-profit. Being a small agency, they really don’t have the funding to afford a huge printer with all the bells and whistles. They just needed a functioning printer until more funds could be secured.

Cost being a primary concern for the agency, the fact that this model of Phaser is only available through refurbishers or off-lease retailers was considered a pro. Anything that can allow more funds to go towards the care of clients, as opposed to infrastructure should be applauded.

The 790 isn’t the fastest printer I have seen but with speeds of 11 pages/minute for black and white and 6 for colour it would suffice for this agency. The most common use that a printer is put here is to produce attention grabbing worksheets for the client and that is usually done in advance of lessons. When it’s not possible to print early the speeds would allow worksheets for 30 clients to be printed in about 5 minutes.

When you compare the 790 to other printers available at its price point, you find that it generally has a much larger paper input capacity. With a maximum capacity for 1400 sheets, staff can load it and forget about it. Saving them time that would be better spent working with clients. The only thing in shorter supply around NPOs than money is time, so this should be considered a positive for the 790.

Another time saving feature of this Xerox Printer is the ability to store documents for reprinting on the standard 6 BG hard drive. Rather than finding and sending a job to the printer and going to collect it, a staff member could simply walk to the machine and spool through the memory to print the document.

The Phaser’s network connectivity would have been groundbreaking in its day, but by the current standards it is woefully lacking. The only inputs are from an internal NIC and serial port. The Phaser has no USB ports or PictBridge support. Although, not common uses for my friend’s agency these features are becoming necessary by most businesses.

While the price of used equipment can be seen as a benefit the possibility of increased maintenance costs must be factored in. There are always risks associated with purchasing second hand merchandize, and especially since the ability is so important to the work done, I consider this a major drawback of the 790.

After weighing the potential of the Xerox Phaser 790, I chose to offer a conditional recommendation. Since the agency was only planning on using the Phaser as an interim printer while they worked to find a long-term solution I felt that the potential for maintenance costs to skyrocket was manageable. As a functional printer the Phaser 790 would meet the needs of this group. We were also able to find a deal on the Xerox Phaser 790 Cartridge, so I thought that this would be a viable option for them. For more information, check out our site http://www.qtoner.us.
