She was a Scottish Aristocrat but more interesting fact is that he was an illegitimate child of Prince of Wales (Edward VII of England).
Edward James had a passion for surrealist poems and he himself was a poet. Therefore, he befriended and sponsored several artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. He was also fond of travelling. In his thirties, he travelled to Taos in New Mexico and Los Angeles. While travelling in Mexico, James was an invitee in Leonora Carringtons party who was a British and surrealist like him. In the party he met Plutarco Gastelum, a Yaqui Indian. They become friend immediately and this was the friendship of life. Their partnership was very fruitful and resulted in todays Sculpture Garden of Las Pozas.
James wanted to grow exotic plants and the search brings him to the jungles of Huasteca. He bought 74 acres of fertile land and started growing orchids. However, sometime later a frost killed majority of the plants. So, he hired local artisans to create cement plants that cannot be affected by the cold. He also built some gothic structures on the property that don’t have stairs and ceilings. You will come across Masonic, biblical and archetypical images in the structures.
