Learning the Life of One of Spain’s National Masters—Diego Velasquez

This master became respected and popular in many parts of the world and could be regarded as one of the most famous if not the most famous Spanish painters of all time—Diego Velasquez. Velasquez could be regarded as Spain’s most well-known and well-respected painters who has created many notable and admirable paintings.

Diego Velasquez was born into a minor nobility family way back in June 5, 1599; he had five younger siblings and at a very young age showed great talent in art. As early as eleven years old he started to learn painting and became an apprentice of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen he was certified by the painters’ guild to be a great painter which permitted him to paint as a professional. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with his master’s daughter and became her husband; he settled down in a house he bought through the money he made in his paintings and he also bought another house which he rented out to tenants.

Diego Velasquez pursued his painting career and produced a number of amazing paintings; he became famous and even the country’s most influential celebrity. He produced an unparalleled work named Surrender of Breda, illustrating the victory of Marquez de Spinola, he made the piece shortly after meeting Spinola and when it was given to Spinola, he was stunned; Spinola cannot believe how brilliant Velasquez was and his ability and skill to capture and let the painting express its emotion. However, Diego Velasquez would produce another painting that is regarded the greatest piece he has created which is Las Meninas or TheMaids in Honour; it is the most viewed painting in the world and even most people that are not familiar with Spanish painters knew his name because of Las Meninas.
