A lot of Spanish painters have put a legacy in the world of painting, and during Spain’s Golden Age or what is called El Siglo de Oro; much of the exceptional Spanish painters were acclaimed. It is also during that era when one painter named Diego Velasquez became most famous and considered as the most sought after and highly respected painter. He is also known for his friendship with King Phillip IV and the chief minister; he was greatly admired by the king as Velasquez showcased his style and outstanding talents in every piece he has made.
Coming from minor nobility, Diego Velasquez was given life in Seville in June 5, 1599 and he was the eldest of six children. Velasquez’s talent was so apparent that at the young age of eleven, he started his lesson with another master of the arts at that time whose name was Francisco Pacheco. Velasquez became the husband of the daughter of his master and made his living for his family through concentrating on making paintings with religious themes for churches and taverns.
Many of the exceptional pieces were produced by Diego Velasquez, which made him one of the country’s highly influential people and most celebrated painter. He produced an unparalleled work named Surrender of Breda, illustrating the victory of Marquez de Spinola, he created the piece shortly after meeting Spinola and when it was given to Spinola, he was stunned; Spinola cannot believe how brilliant Velasquez was and his ability and skill to capture and let the painting express its emotion. Another artwork which may be the most reknowned one credited to his name, is The Maids in Honour or Las Meninas; uniquely, he painted himself inside the artwork, quietly working on a canvas at the background.
Much more can be told about Diego Velasquez, his life, paintings and character; he truly is Spain’s most reknowned painter and one of Spain’s pride.
