Beech Wood

Types of Wood
There is a wide range of wood that can be used by the woodworker. The woods used by the woodworker fall into three categories, being, softwoods, hardwoods and man-made woods.
Of the thousands of natural timbers in existence (natural timbers being the hardwoods and softwoods) there are only 60 to 80 that are commonly used. In contrast the woodworker only uses about half a dozen of all manufactured woods (man-made woods).
The type of wood that you use will depend on the texture you after, your budget, type of project and availability. As there is such a variety of woods available you will always find the type of wood that you are looking for. The three categories of wood, hardwoods, softwoods and man-made woods are briefly described below:
Hardwoods
Hardwood is the preferred wood that is used by woodworkers due the wide range of textures and colors available. Due to the large variety of hardwoods available it is not possible to list them all in this article, however, a few of the most popular are:
Beech
Beech has proved to be a very popular wood due to it being a light, strong and hard wood. Beech comes in a whitish color and has a fine texture and it is known to be easy to work with. The wood also glues easily and bends exceptionally well.
Oak
Of the different varieties of oak that are available the two most popular are the European variety (yellow in color) and the American variety (pink to reddish in color). Oak is a sturdy and durable wood that has pronounced pores and is used for larger pieces of furniture such as cabinets and lounges.
Mahogany
Mahogany has a reddish-brown color and a very distinctive coarse to medium grain. As the timber is extremely popular in furniture making it does tend to be hard to find and expensive.
A larger list of hardwoods can be found at: Hardwoods
Softwoods
Softwoods are younger trees and are generally only 20 to 25 years old. Listed below are some of the more popular softwoods:
Pine
Due to the large variety of species of pine found around the world most regions will have at least one species. There is a plentiful supply of pine and as such it is inexpensive, it also has a creamy yellow or clean white color and is easy to use. Pine has a fine to medium texture, is straight grained and can be knotty.
Cedar
Cedar is a fine textured, straight grained timber that has a honey color and is known for its aromatic fragrance. Cedar of Lebanon is the most popular species of cedar and is commonly used in cabinet making.

Man-made Woods
There are many timbers that have become rarer and more expensive and as a result we have become more reliant on man-made woods. Man-made woods are known to be more durable, cheaper and available than natural timbers. There a few different types of man-made woods on the market, including:
Plywood
Plywood is manufactured to have a high strength-to-weight ratio and comes is a variety of shapes, sizes and thickness. Plywood is made by laminating thin sheets of wood together with the grains of each sheet being at right angles to each other.
MDF
Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is made by using a tough resin to fix together tiny particles. The wood has a smooth dense surface and is available in a variety of sizes, shapes and thicknesses.
